  • Always Modding the Mod !!!
Imagine You and your Navigator driving a preplanned route which will only be provided to you during the very last minute before the start.  You will have to follow a specific route...It's not how fast you get from point "A" to point "B"...it's how close you can come to the Bogey Time which will be based on the posted speed limits and driving conditions over the Segment driven and mapped by the organizer (me).

You will need to decode the route’s actual entry point and then follow the route provided and come as close to the Bogey time as possible.  If you spend too much time decoding the actual entry point you may fall behind the Bogey Time and accumulate Penalty minutes.

Penalty and Bonus Times will be “rewarded” based on arrival times and Challenge results

This will be a 12 Av Rally...no more than 12 Avalanches to participate.  You MUST drive an Avalanche to participate because there will be "Challenges" along the course at the Start/Finish Camp where you will have a chance to "earn" bonus time to help your score.  ALL Challanges will be Avalanche SPECIFIC so you MUST drive an Avalanche to take part in the Challenges.
BRING YOUR OWNERS MANUAL = REQUIRED ITEM

I will stay as close as reasonable to the
Wessex Motor Club
12-Car Rally Rules
University of Southampton, England

There will be some variance to the published rules since I want to keep the process fairly simple and more importantly...FUN !!!
There will be a 2 minute delay between the departure of each Avalanche at the start of each segment
It will be run in daylight

Date: Should be a Saturday or Sunday in September (up to 12 Avalanches)

Time: 1/2 day Rally that starts around 10 AM and finishes about 6 hours later.

Where: The Departure point will be announced at a later date but will be in the  Downtown Sacramento area

Distance:  To keep this event manageable when considering fuel costs the total distance driven will NOT EXCEED 100 miles

Prizes: Like a Poker Run there will be an entry fee of $10.00 per Avalanche (Can be more if folks want but it needs stay friendly)
Winner gets 70% and a special memento
2ND Place gets 20%
3RD PLACE gets 10%

WHYS/HOWCOMES AND DA RULES:
The winner will be the team that comes closest to the Aggregate Bogey Time after all bonuses and penalties are assessed.

Navigation and computers are prohibited except for the Organizer and Start/Finish personnel.

1.  The start and finish for each route segment WILL be at the same location to eliminate travel by the Start/Finish Team/Event Organizer/Segment Timing Official/Challenge Judges etc
One thought that comes to mind is Discovery Park by the Sac River. Does NOT have to be there...but is a central location from which many routes could start from.

2.  Sacramento is like a "Hub" or a "Flower" with "Petals" branching out in many directions.  If we let the segment routes flow away and then return to the Start/Finish line it allows everyone to have a central location to "store" food and drink/allow the Organizer/Judges/Timing Official etc to watch over said belongings and be in a single stable location.

3.  Due to the nature of the 5 Challenges I have come up with...some "setup" time will be needed.  Again having a central start/finish point is an advantage...eliminates having to carry gear from point to point

4.  No single route segment will exceed 30 miles and there will not be over 5 route segments (total driving distance not to exceed 100 miles)

5.  The organizer CANNOT divulge the specifics of the 5 Challenges as to do so would compromise "On the Spot Skills and Knowledge"…3 of the Challenges will be Avalanche Specific...and 2 will involve SLOW SPEED (less than 10mph) driving skills.  YOU MUST BRING YOUR OWNERS MANUAL WITH YOU = REQUIRED!!!

6.  All Driver/Navigator Teams will be issued the same route 30 seconds prior to their scheduled departure time.  The routes will have some street names...they will have approximate Time/Distance notes to each turn and the direction of turn along with a landmark.
There will be "CODEBOXES" along the route.  These CODEBOXESS will be 6X6 white squares with a letter painted on it.  The Driver will "CALL OUT" the letter to the Navigator who will "LOG" the letter on the Route Sheet.  This will provide VERIFICATION that the specific route has been followed.  Penalty points will be awarded for incomplete entry/s on the Route Sheet if the Team misses a CODEBOX.  They will be located in OBVIOUS places along the route and the number will vary along with the staggering.
It will be the Navigators job to "Decifer" the route and guide the Driver around the route segment.
The Bogey Time will be provided to each team when they open the provided route segment envelope.

7.  Penalties will be given for early AND late arrivals...early penalties are considerably more costly than late arrivals.  Your expected arrival time will be given to you at the moment of departure.  ALL TIMING (EXCEPT CHALLENGE TIMING) WILL BE ROUNDED TO THE NEARES MINUTE.  EXAMPLE 2:32:56 WILL BE RECORDED AS 2:32 AND 2:33:01 WILL BE RECORDED AS 2:33  CHALLENGE TIMING WILL BE BY STOP WATCH TO THE NEAREST SECOND.  CHALLENGE TIMING TIES ARE BROKEN BY THE FIRST TEAM AQUIRING THE TIME.  THE SECOND TEAM AQUIRING THE SAME TIME WILL BE AWARDED THE NEXT PLACE FINISH AND SO ON.  TIES AT THE END OF COMPETETION (AFTER THE FINAL CHALLENGE) WILL BE BROKEN BY CODEBOX ENTRIES/MISSES.  THE TEAM WITH THE MOST CORRECT CODEBOX ENTRIES WILL BE THE WINNER.  IF A TIE STILL EXISTS THERE WILL BE A SUDDEN DEATH CHALLENGE BETWEEN THE TWO TEAMS (DRIVER AND NAVIGATOR EACH MUST PARTICIPATE).  IF A TIE EXISTS AFTER SUDDEN DEATH THE FIRST AND SECOND PLACE MONIES WILL BE COMBINED AND SPLIT 50/50.  THE MEMENTO IN CASE OF A TIE…I DON’T KNOW…COIN TOSS?

8.  Challenge winners will receive Time Bonus awards to be added to their overall score.  These bonuses apply to 1st/2nd and 3rd place Challenge winners.  The last place Challenge participant receives a small Time Penalty.  Other finishers starting with 4th place up to but not including last place earn no bonus or penalty...just the reward of competition.  Challenges will take place after each Segment including the Final Challenge will take place after the last driving segment and could have a bearing on the overall winner.

There will be NO Eliminations...Everyone has a chance to win all the way to the end...and the Final Challenge Winner could come from the back of the pack to win overall.  There will also be NO OUTSIDE TIME LIMIT DISQUALIFICATIONS.
.

There WILL be a Lunch Break…

HOWEVER...the Starting Time of the Segment Immediately following Lunch WILL be announced at the start of lunch...if you are late to the starting line you WILL be PENALIZED !!!

Please reply if you are interested...who the Driver and Navigator will be...and choose a Name for your Team

Sounds like a great idea Cliff!  I'm in for now.  The later in September, the better.  I don't know if any volunteers right now, since it's just me and Ebru.

So will we all have pre-assigned destinations that will be given to use right before the start of the rally?   ;D

I have cleaned up this thread posting ALL the current data in the very first post.

This GTG/Rally is also posted on the National Site...so as you post here...please do so there as well...

To me it appears the only things left to hammer out are:

Actual Date:  No Hurry

Actual Location for Start/Finish Camp:  Need Suggestions

Actual Fee if Any:  Do ya wanna have a Poker Run Style Pot?

How about if we meet somewhere in the middle like the Vacaville Outlets, in Vacaville?

Vacaville Premium Outlets
321 Nut Tree Road, Suite 2
Vacaville, CA 95687
(707) 447-5755

We could hook up at Kristen's Coffee Corner, which is suite 240 on the attached map.

A Poker Run Style Pot would be cool (cash only)

One of the reasons for using Sac is the "Hub" concept for the 4 to 5 outbound routes to emanate from.

Also with gas prices fluctuating I don't want folks having to drive a ways to get there and then have the routes to drive as well.

For me...I have only to get there since I can't "participate"

The past has shown that more members participate when it's local to Sacto than having to travel.

I'm also a little more familiar with Sacto roads than Vacaville and don't think it would be as easy to find 4 to 5 routes that flow out and back to a Central location in Vacaville.

Also we need an area (park type) where we can set up the Challenge area (need room for driving section without interfering with businesses) which is why Discovery Park came to mind...but there must be other locations in Sac/West Sac where we can occupy 100 square yards or so without being an interference to anyone else.

I made this suggestion for a GTG picnic a few weeks ago.........Howe Park........right off El Camino and US 80.
There's no charge to enter parking lots shown as options 1, 2 & 3.  Option 1 is a more intimate lot that should
meet our use.  Option 2 is right near the corner of Bell and Cottage........easy in and out.  Option 3 is the main
parking lot for the park with lots of room.
